Job Description

Job description

Second Marine Electrical Specialist
Business area:  Offshore Engine Room
Department:
Job Level:  Intermediate
Job Location (Short):  Leiden, NLD

Would you like to work in a challenging and complex environment?

Your role in the story
As Second Marine Electrical Specialist, you keep the vessel’s installations in optimal condition by detecting, repairing, and reporting functional defects in electrical equipment and automation systems. You are a real trouble-shooter who can also guide and assist the machine room staff with maintenance tasks in the engine room and on deck. You conduct condition-based monitoring to prevent equipment breakdowns and carry out functional tests on safety and emergency stop systems. Furthermore, you prepare job safety analyses and contribute to toolbox meetings.

What you will be working on

  • Maintaining equipment and electrical systems according to the maintenance program in the engine room, bridge (DP systems, satellite systems, etc.), accommodation (air conditioning, lifts), galley, cranes, and other deck equipment such as forklifts and impact hammers.
  • Detecting, reporting, and solving electrical malfunctions in systems, circuits, and equipment.
  • Guiding subcontractors with troubleshooting and carrying out repairs.
  • Performing low-voltage switching, electrical isolation, and overrides.
  • Assisting during construction work by operating electrical systems and providing facilities.
  • Providing input on the performance of electrical engineering staff such as new hires and trainees.
  • Conducting Job Safety Analyses and Toolbox Talks.

Key ingredients for success

  • A minimum Vocational or Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Mechatronics, or a diploma from a Maritime College.
  • At least 2 years of offshore experience with electro-technical ship installations.
  • Experience with DP vessels (preferably holding a Kongsberg certificate).
  • Knowledge of MS Office, ERP systems, and preferably CAD tools.
  • Result-oriented mindset and excellent teamwork skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (Dutch is a plus).

Curious to meet your future crew and workplace?
The electrical installations on board our crane vessels appeal to the imagination, from generators that deliver a combined 96,000 kW (enough to power a city!) to the complexity of our Dynamic Positioning systems that use GPS and multiple 5500 kW thrusters rotating 360 degrees.

On our SSCV’s, the electrical systems keep the entire vessel running safely and efficiently. At Heerema, the Electrical Department has a clear structure to ensure smooth offshore operations and seamless technical support across all systems:

Assistant Electricians (2x) → Electricians 3 (3x) → Electricians 2 (2x) → Electricians 1 (2x) → Marine Automation Engineer (1x) → Chief Electrician (1x)

All positions, except for the Chief Electrician and Marine Automation Engineer, are divided per shift to guarantee continuous 24/7 operations.

In addition to the electrical crew, you’ll work closely with our Engine Room Team, which consists of Oilers (5x) → Mechanics 2 (2x) → Mechanics 1 (2x) → Assistant Engineers (2x) → Engineers 2 (3x) → Engineers 1 (3x) → Assistant Chief Engineer (1x) → Chief Engineer (1x), and with the Stores Department, including Chief Storekeeper (1x) → Storekeeper 1 (1x) → Storekeeper 2 (2x).

Since several activities overlap with the engine room department, close collaboration between both teams is essential.

Is this your dream job? Put in your application now!

The application process consists of two interviews, an online assessment, and an employment offer.

The first interview will be conducted via Microsoft Teams with the Chief Engineer and/or Chief Electrician, giving you the opportunity to learn more about the technical aspects of the role and life on board our vessels.
The second interview will take place at our office in Leiden, where you’ll meet additional team members and get a better feel for our culture and working environment.

As part of the process, you will also complete an online assessment, which will take place either before or immediately after the first interview.
