Job description

Mate 2 Tug
Business area:  Offshore Marine Crew
Department:
Job Level:  Intermediate
Job Location (Short):  Leiden, NLD

Ready to come on board as Mate 2 on one of our state-of-the-art Anchor Handling Tugs?

At Heerema Marine Contractors, we do something new every day. We operate the world’s largest crane vessels and use them to transport, install, and remove offshore structures for the offshore energy markets. Our projects range from installing wind turbines and removing decommissioned oil and gas platforms to installing structures weighing up to 50,000 metric tons. By joining us, you will play an important role in our unique maritime adventure.

Your role in the story:

As a Mate 2 Tug, you are responsible for watchkeeping and safe navigation in accordance with the Captain’s orders and international laws and regulations. You will operate the DP system and actively contribute to safety-related activities on board.

You ensure that all procedures, including ISM, are followed, and you keep nautical charts up to date. You check navigational equipment, maintain the logbook, monitor weather forecasts, and take timely action when needed. Additionally, you are always aware of the vessel’s position, perform duties during anchoring operations, maintain radio communication, and monitor all vessel movements.

We are looking for someone with the right skills and development potential: the ambition and ability to grow within our organization. This role offers opportunities to further develop your nautical expertise and grow within Heerema.

What you will be working on:

  • Watchkeeping and navigation of Anchor Handling Tugs
  • Maintaining and updating navigation systems
  • Monitoring weather conditions and vessel movements
  • Towing, barge mooring and anchor handling operations
  • Ensuring compliance with safety procedures and ISM standards

Key ingredients for success:

  • Dutch secondary or bachelor Nautical degree
  • Certificate of Competence: Chief officer, Officer in Charge of Navigational watch
  • 3–8 years of relevant offshore experience in a similar role
  • Strong communication skills in Dutch and English
  • Practical, hands-on and problem-solving mindset
  • Accurate reporting skills and a proactive attitude
  • Eagerness to learn and develop

Your future colleagues:

Of course, you are curious to meet us as well! You will work closely with experienced and professional nautical crew members who will support and guide you on board. On our tug vessels, we work in relatively small teams, which creates a close-knit and highly collaborative working environment. With short lines of communication and strong mutual trust in each other’s expertise, this team spirit enables us to operate efficiently, safely, and with enjoyment.
