Jr. Technical Superintendent Tugs & Barges
Job Description

Job description

Are you passionate about technology and the maritime world? Are you eager to develop your technical skills, gain hands-on experience and learn from experienced maritime professionals? Do you enjoy variety, working with different people and finding practical solutions to technical challenges? Then this could be the perfect opportunity for you!

Your role in the story

As Junior Technical Superintendent Tugs & Barges, you will support the technical management of our tugs, barges and specific equipment used across Heerema's offshore projects.

Working under the guidance of experienced Technical Superintendents, you will gradually develop your knowledge of vessel maintenance, technical inspections, repairs and operational requirements.

One day you may be visiting one of our vessels or shipyards to assist with maintenance activities, while the next you are in the office helping coordinate inspections, repairs or technical documentation.

You will work closely with our Medior and Senior Technical Superintendents, Asset Equipment Manager, Vessel Management Teams and Operational Managers to ensure our assets remain safe, reliable and ready for operation.

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to grow into a Technical Superintendent role. You will be encouraged to take initiative, ask questions, learn from experienced colleagues and gradually take on more responsibility.

Your home base can be either Leiden or Vlissingen, with regular visits to our vessels, yards and suppliers.

What you will be working on

  • Support the coordination and supervision of repair, maintenance and technical activities for our tugs, barges and project-specific equipment;

  • Assist experienced Technical Superintendents with maintenance planning, technical inspections and classification requirements;

  • Help identify technical issues and risks, and contribute to practical solutions;

  • Work closely with internal teams, vessel crews, shipyards and suppliers to support daily technical operations;

  • Assist with technical documentation, maintenance reports and follow-up actions;

  • Participate in vessel visits, inspections and repair activities to gain practical experience;

  • Gradually take ownership of smaller technical tasks under the guidance of a Medior or Senior Technical Superintendent.

Key ingredients for success

For us, this role is about more than technical knowledge alone. We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in technology and the maritime sector, who is eager to learn and enjoys working together with different people. You are curious, proactive and not afraid to ask questions. You enjoy solving problems, take initiative and are motivated to develop yourself into a skilled Technical Superintendent. You don't need to know everything yet. What matters most is your technical foundation, hands-on mentality, willingness to learn and drive to make things happen.

Furthermore, you have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture or a related technical discipline;

  • Some relevant technical experience, preferably within a maritime, offshore or industrial environment. Recent graduates with relevant internships are also encouraged to apply;

  • A good technical foundation and a strong interest in vessel maintenance, repairs and mechanical systems;

  • Good organizational and communication skills and a practical, hands-on approach;

  • A proactive attitude, willingness to learn and ability to work effectively in a team;

  • Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English, both written and spoken;

  • Flexibility to travel to our vessels, shipyards and other locations when required.

Your future fleet

You will work with a diverse portfolio of tugs and barges supporting Heerema's offshore operations.

Among them are Kolga and Bylgia, our 72-meter DP2 tugs, custom-built to support our crane vessel operations. Both vessels are equipped with a retractable bow thruster and have a bollard pull of approximately 200 tons. Their anchor handling systems allow them to install anchors in water depths of up to 1,500 meters.

Working across different assets, projects and technical challenges means no two days are the same. You will gain valuable practical experience while developing your technical and coordination skills alongside experienced colleagues.
