Your role in the story
During your watch you are responsible for the safe, efficient inspection and maintenance of machinery as well as equipment in engine room spaces, accommodation, galley, deck, project related equipment and lifesaving equipment. You report defects and malfunctioning of systems, circuits, equipment and interrupt, without any hesitation, unsafe activities or conditions and report these. Furthermore you assist during construction activities by operating the pile driving hammers, pile handling tools, compressors, pumps and cargo barge ballast systems. You keep the engine room book updated, perform toolboxes, ensure a proper job and shift handover. As a last you supervise the technical (fleet) personnel on watch together with new technical personnel and trainees.
Key ingredients for success:
This position requires an experienced Engineer with a vocational or Bachelor Maritime degree (MAROF) or an equivalent oriented technical background (preference is to have the STCW CoC AIII-2, Chief Engineer unlimited). You have a minimum of 5 years’ of experience as Engineer on board of an offshore vessel, a Dynamic Positioning operated vessel is an advantage.
As a person you possess proven leadership skills, a practical, problem-solving, result-oriented mindset and you are a true team player. Your command of both the English and Dutch language, written and spoken, is excellent.

Curious to meet your future crew? On our SSCV’s, the engine room is the beating heart of the operation. At Heerema, on our SSCV’s, the engine room hierarchy is clearly defined to ensure smooth and efficient offshore operations:
Oilers (5x) → Mechanics 2 (2x) → Mechanics 1 (2x) → Assistant Engineers (2x) → Engineers 2 (3x) → Engineers 1 (3x) → Assistant Chief Engineer (1x) → Chief Engineer (1x).
All positions, except for the Assistant Chief Engineer and Chief Engineer, are divided per shift to guarantee continuous 24/7 operations.
In addition to the engine room crew, you’ll work closely with our Electrical Team, which consists of Assistant Electricians (2x) → Electricians 3 (3x) → Electricians 2 (2x) → Electricians 1 (2x) → Marine Automation Engineer (1x) → Chief Electrician, and with the Stores Department, including Chief Storekeeper (1x) → Storekeeper 1 (1x) → Storekeeper 2 (2x).
In this position you will work closely with professional and experienced colleagues on deck, on the bridge and in the engine room.

The application process consists of two interviews, an online assessment, and an employment offer.
- The first interview will be conducted via Microsoft Teams with the Chief Engineer, giving you the opportunity to learn more about the technical aspects of the role and life on board our vessels.
- The second interview will take place at our office in Leiden, where you’ll meet additional team members and get a better feel for our culture and working environment.
As part of the process, you will also complete an online assessment, which will take place either before or immediately after the first interview.
